Paul Landacre was a wood engraver working in Los Angeles. Weyhe Gallery sold his prints in New York City, and Carl Zigrosser admired his work and took a particular interest in promoting Landacre's career. Landacre's letters to Zigrosser are forthcoming: he mentions specific prints, his motivation, techniques and materials, changes in style, prices and edition sizes. Landacre also mentions sales, exhibitions and prizes, as well as his work for Associated American Artists and Sam Golden. He writes of his very simple attitude towards his art, the influence of nature and music, and artists whose work he admires. Landacre is one of the artists Zigrosser featured in his book The Artist in America. Zigrosser introduced Landacre to the poet, Donald Culross Peattie, and Landacre illustrated books for Peattie. There are several letters that touch on money problems, and a long letter from 1943 in which Landacre writes about a crisis in his desire to create art. Zigrosser found Landacre to be an admirably thoughtful, self-disciplined artist who actually looked at his work critically and grew through hand work. Included with the correspondence are clippings by or about Landacre, several pieces by Zigrosser about his work, and photographs of the artist.
